Reading
Chapter 5: This is how reading helped me reconnect with myself after losing my mum to mental health.
I think one of the hardest parts about losing a loved one to suicide is that you also lose the ability to put your emotions and experiences into words — and that can be devastating.
Reading made me feel connected to the world again.
It reminded me that other people had experienced pain, healing, heartbreak, love, trauma, growth, and transformation too.
That I wasn’t alone in this journey.
I later learned that trauma can affect the part of the brain responsible for speech and language.
In moments of overwhelming pain, our nervous system shifts into survival mode, and the brain struggles to organise our experience into coherent language.
Which means sometimes, after trauma, it’s not that we don’t want to talk about what happened.
We physically can’t.
And that can feel really isolating.
When I read books like The Body Keeps the Score, Carl Jung, literature by Jane Austen, Oscar Wilde, Virginia Woolf, poetry by John Keats, Emily Brontë
They gave me language for feelings I couldn’t yet express, and helped me make sense of experiences that once felt overwhelming
And I think that changed everything.
Because once you can understand your emotions, you can begin to process them.
Looking back now, I realise that reading helped me rebuild my ability to speak my truth.
Sometimes, when we cannot find our own words yet, someone else’s words can hold us gently until we do.
And I think that’s one of the reasons why storytelling, books, and honest conversations are so powerful.
The Body Keeps the Score
